Social educational family support
section 31 SGB VIII
Social educational family support under section 31 SGB VIII helps families in difficult circumstances with parenting tasks, with managing conflicts and crises, and in dealings with authorities and institutions. The support takes place in the family's everyday life. Miro Sozialdienste GmbH delivers this service on an outpatient basis in Leverkusen, Cologne and the Rhein-Berg district.
What family support covers
- Family counselling on parenting matters and handling conflict
- Everyday structure: daily routines, division of tasks, appointments
- Help with school and administrative matters
- Accompaniment to meetings, for example with the school, nursery or youth welfare office
We work with the family's own resources and involve all family members as needed.
Which families the support is for
Family support is for families facing several pressures at once, where parenting and organising everyday life need support. It is designed around self-help: we develop solutions together with the family so that the family can carry them on independently later.
Process and cooperation
The support is initiated through the responsible youth welfare office. Goals, scope and review are agreed in the assistance planning procedure under section 36 SGB VIII. We document the process, take part in assistance planning meetings and coordinate with the school, nursery and other parties.
Frequently asked questions
When can social educational family support be useful?
Social educational family support (SPFH) under section 31 SGB VIII supports families when parenting, conflicts or everyday tasks are persistently overwhelming. It can help when several pressures coincide and conversations alone are insufficient. Practical solutions are developed together so the family can manage everyday life more independently again.
How do I get social educational family support?
As a legal guardian, contact the youth welfare office or General Social Service in your place of residence. There you describe your situation and discuss what support is needed. If family support is suitable, goals and scope are agreed with you in the assistance plan and commissioning a suitable provider is clarified.
What does social educational family support cost parents?
Social educational family support approved by the youth welfare office is paid for by the youth welfare office. Parents do not have to pay a contribution for this outpatient support, including one based on income. The agreement with the youth welfare office determines which support is covered.
Does family support come to our home and what does it do there?
The support takes place in the family's everyday life, often at home. Miro Sozialdienste helps, for example, with developing reliable daily routines, dealing with parenting conflicts and discussions with school, daycare or authorities. The professional develops solutions together with the family and strengthens its own ability to act.
Is family support domestic help or childcare?
Family support is social educational support. It helps parents and children organise tasks, resolve conflicts and shape everyday life better. It does not replace regular cleaning, childcare or running the household. The aim is for the family to increasingly implement the steps developed independently.
How often does family support come and how long does it stay?
SPFH is generally designed as longer-term support. The number of appointments and duration are agreed according to your family's needs. The assistance planning meeting regularly reviews whether the goals still fit and whether the support is sufficient. Good cooperation and the family's participation are essential.
