Under section 41 SGB VIII, young adults receive support for as long as assistance is needed for their personal development and for leading a self-determined life. Miro Sozialdienste GmbH accompanies young people in Leverkusen, Cologne and the Rhein-Berg district through the transition into adult life. The topics are concrete: housing, training or work, and organising everyday life.
What the support covers
- Housing: finding a flat, tenancy matters, running a household
- Training and work: applications, contact with school, employer or the employment agency
- Administration and finances: applications, appointments, managing a personal budget
- Social relationships and coping with pressure
Priorities are set together with the young person and adjusted as things develop.
Who the support is for
The service is aimed at young adults who are building a self-determined life and continue to need social educational guidance. It requires the young person's own participation; planning happens with them, not about them.
Process and cooperation
The young person applies to the responsible youth welfare office themselves. Goals and scope are agreed in the assistance planning procedure under section 36 SGB VIII and reviewed regularly. When the support ends, follow-up support under section 41a SGB VIII can be arranged.
Frequently asked questions
Up to what age is support for young adults available?
Support under section 41 SGB VIII is for young adults from the age of 18 whose personal development does not yet ensure an independent and self-responsible life. It is generally granted until their 21st birthday. In justified individual cases, it should be continued beyond that for a limited period. Individual need is decisive.
Can I receive youth welfare for the first time at 18 or after an interruption?
Yes, previous youth welfare is not a prerequisite for first-time support under section 41 SGB VIII. Support may also be granted again after it has ended. The youth welfare office assesses the current need and legal requirements in each case. Contact the youth welfare office early if you need support.
How do I apply for support for young adults?
As an adult, you submit the application yourself to the responsible youth welfare office. Describe as specifically as possible what you cannot yet manage alone in everyday life and where you need guidance. If youth welfare is already in place, the transition should be discussed before your 18th birthday. Your goals are set jointly in the assistance plan.
Do I have to pay for outpatient support from my income?
The youth welfare office does not charge a contribution for approved outpatient support for young adults. This applies to the agreed educational guidance. Funding for housing and living costs is a separate issue and must be clarified with the responsible bodies depending on your circumstances.

Yes, these topics are part of our support for young adults. For example, we help prepare applications, understand tenancy matters, organise contact with authorities and manage a personal budget. The specific tasks are agreed with you. We cannot guarantee a home, training place or approval of cash benefits.
What happens when my support for young adults ends?
The transition is planned with you and the youth welfare office. This clarifies whether support from other bodies is needed and what follow-up support under section 41a SGB VIII is appropriate. This allows outstanding questions about everyday life, housing or training to be addressed after the previous support ends.
